Tornado!!!

Tonight has been quite eventful here in Bentonville! Hopefully it won't do this again anytime soon. The weather has been beautiful today, our high was 71! Well along with nice warm weather in January of course will come cold weather so then you get tornado's. Bentonville has only had 1 tornado in the past 30 years- it was 2 years ago, very close to where we are living now. There are no basements in the houses which totally freaked me out. But I was reassured that we are pretty safe here. So far it's been OK- a few warnings but nothing close to our house. Tonight I really questioned how safe we are! We have a storm alert radio- an alarm sounds for severe weather. It had already gone off a few times saying there was a warning for severe thunderstorms. It went off right after FHE at 7:15, we figured T- storm again. It was a tornado warning and it was headed right to Bentonville! We heard that and called the kids downstairs and of course they ignored us because what kid really answers on the first call?! I went upstairs and told them to get in our tornado closet and the look on their faces was pure panic! We got the kids in and then turned on the TV and realized our mistake. The radio doesn't get as specific as the TV, so we had 3 girls in the closet in hysterics and we realized the storm is still a half hour away. We have games and the portable DVD player so they would be entertained, but they were terrified! Luckily that storm passed us after a half hour- It barely missed us. But another one was 20 minutes behind that was going to be right over us. I was scared now! We had tried putting the kids to bed in our room, but the lightning and thunder was WAY to loud, so 20 minutes later we had to get them up and go back in the closet. The TV kept going out, but the thunder and lightning were so loud- I haven't heard anything like that in a long time. Darrell didn't get in the closet because he was trying to follow the news, but when he came to the closet I knew it was close. It was so quiet and peaceful, and he said it's right above us. Luckily there was no tornado, we thought! We got the kids out again and put them back in our room. On the news they were showing pictures and there was tornado damage not even a mile away!!!
This is so freaky to me!! I am not a very calm person during these types of situations- so I'm sure my kids hysterics were because I was terrified. Anyway, the kids are now asleep in my bed, and there is another storm coming. It doesn't seem to be coming to us- or I wouldn't be typing! But I am so thankful everything was OK! the girls were praying in the closet and when I came to check on them in my bed they were praying again. It made me so happy to see that they have faith in the power of prayer. Ashlee told me how their prayers worked since the tornado didn't come down on us.
So all of you who do not have to worry about tornado's be thankful- they are no fun!!!
A side note to explain the houses here- the master bedroom is very rarely on the same floor as the kids rooms. Lexi and Ashlee are upstairs and Carly and our bedroom is downstairs. A few of my friends have the rooms all on the same floor, I am incredible jealous after tonight! There is now a tornado watch in effect until 5 am- it's going to be a LONG night!!
I know this picture isn't the greatest, but it was 10:00 at night! Look how bright the sky is though- the lightning was just plain scary!! I wasn't about to go stand outside waiting for a really good one- this will have to do!

That is SO scary! I have never lived anywhere where there have been tornados. I think that is very scary!

I'd be freakin' out too!! Reading your story makes me think of growing up in Texas. There were always tornado watches and warnings, but NEVER anything too close. We also had a closet designated for shelter in case of bad weather. My favorite though was the hail storms!

YIKES! That's really scary. In Iowa we had a few warnings, but our closest one was about 10 miles away. But I gotta say, I have always wanted to see the green sky. Did you see it? Glad you are ok!

I'm glad you are all okay. Not to poke fun, but I do wish I could have seen your reaction. Were you breathing? Remeber the one in Kansas city? I remeber having to go get Dutchess and calling her into the garage. I coudn't hear myself screaming at her! She came running though. I just remeber her coming out of the dirt flying through the air. Scary! Then Kevin walking through the door a while later saying everything had cleared.

Time to move back to Vegas. We just have strippers and armed robbery's. Just Kidding. When I lived in Utah we had that ONE tornado, and Carter was just little. I was freaked out too. I didn't know what to do. I didn't realize it was downtown SLC and I wasn't even close so I was OK.

That is so scary, I cant imaging watching my kids scared like that. I was downtown when the one hit here 9 years ago. It was my cousins wedding and we just came out of the temple to take pictures. I was just talking to Brandon about that, that I am glad we dont have to worry about Tornados or Hurricanes. Glad everything is ok.

Don't feel bad about freaking out. When Kylea and Logan were little we had a tonado watch in Las Vegas. It was when we lived on St. Louis. I was worried because all of the rooms had windows. We would have had a hard time all climbing into the closets in that little place. Needless to say it never reared it's ugly head so all was well.
