Here's an email I got this morning, as a mother with longer hair and 3 daughter with longer hair- this is an email I never have wanted to receive!
"Sisters,
Just a note to let you know that there has been some head lice found on some of our Primary children in the ward. Please check your children for head lice—just to be safe. It’s always better to make sure so that it does not keep getting spread around the ward. If you do not know how to do this, I’m sure there is info on the internet.
Thank you in advance for being subtle and kind regarding this issue."
Okay, so I know I am not being very kind right now- I'm not trying to be mean though. I have NO idea how to check for head lice, and that is one of the things I have always said I hope we never have to even check. I watched a special on a morning show a few months ago on what they called super lice. It's lice that is surviving all the treatments- they are mutating and getting stronger so they can survive. That really freaked me out! I just dropped the girls off at school and want to go get them and check their heads really fast- well if only I knew what to look for and how to do it! Have any of you seen how much hair Lexi has?! That would be why it's been my worst nightmare.
I know it doesn't mean kids are dirty and gross when they get lice. In fact it's really the opposite. I have read that lice likes clean hair more then dirty hair. That's why my kids go to school every day with tons of hairspray, and leave in conditioner- the more products, the more I'm hoping the lice will decide another head looks cleaner. I remember having lice when I was little and my mom combing through our hair over the bath, everything being washed, so many things put in plastic bags.... what a pain! (I think there were 5 of us kids who got it from school.) I'm a lazy-ish person- all that hassle because of some stupid bugs! But you can bet I'd be doing it like crazy if my kids had it!
Have any of you gone through this. I know I'm overly paranoid- but if any of your kids have had lice, or if you've had to check please let me know how I'm suppose to do it.
Onto other better things.... I am very surprised by the voting on what the baby will be- more guesses on a boy then a girl.... very interesting!
I started back to the gym yesterday- I can feel every muscle in my body and it is screaming at me!! I only did cardio and biceps, oh I did these great hamstring exercises too- OUCH! I did pull ups, and won't be doing those again until after the baby is born. I am definitely not said to give those up! But I didn't realize how much you use your ab's. I pulled something yesterday in my ab's, so sadly I'll have to let those go for another 6-7 months, boo hoo! But wouldn't you know it, I have geared myself up for going and even Carly is so excited to start going each day, but she woke up with a fever today. Just my luck, I'll have to really make myself keep going after she's better. Even though I'm sore it felt so good to be there- I really missed it!

I read that email right before I went to bed and it kept me awake for a good part to the night....not a fun thing to look forward to. Here is a site that talks about how to check for it and it has some information on what to do if you are prego...

I am glad that you made it back to the gym...what time are you going. I went yesterday, but it is so much better to go with someone.
Sorry about that! I haven't had to deal with that...thank goodness!! Goodluck, and you will have to post instructions when you figure out was works!
Great job going back to the gym. Ditto here. I have a love/hate relationship with that place. I hope one day it turns more into love....at least like.
I hear you - I haven't been able to stop scratching my head. I am preparing to check my kids when they get home from school. Yeah!
i had head lice 6 years ago as a teacher. horrible. my whole class had it. i hope you don't. it is WAY too much work to get rid of the little meanies!!!
ever heard of the term NIT PICKING??? i realized what that meant as patrick was picking out nits from my waist long hair. (we were engaged then....and he still married me. :)
i so hope you dont have them!
My girls have never had lice (knock on wood). However, when I owned a daycare center we had a large breakout and had to do some major fumigation.
If you'd like me to check your girls, I'd be happy to come over and teach you.
Ew. Now I am scratching my head. Oh girlie, I will SO be praying that y'all don't get lice!!!!!
It is not hard to check for lice. look at the scalp in several areas. It looks like dandruff, but it will not come off of the hair if you blow on it. It has to be picked out. Odds are your girls don't have it. The hairspray definately helps in that respect. We had some kids in primary that had lice a while back. Instead of telling them to go home, the primary president just told the teachers to sit by them. Yea right!!!!! It gave me a serious case of the phantom itching. Even though it was a sunday I bought rid on the way home from church and treated myself and the kids. If it freaks you out or your not sure, just get the shampoo and wash all the sheets and you should be ok
Good Luck
Lice is no fun!!! And it is lots of work to clean up. My girls went through it last year. It seems with all the medical magic we have now adays, there should be a super simple way to eradicate these awful little creatures!
Prevention, its almost like an oxy moron, how do you prevent the common cold? Yes you do all the right things food choices, exercise, but at the end of the day you are vulnerable to situations beyond your control. Case in point, I am sure that my girls got them from the movie theater outing with her friends. I volunteered to take a group of girls 8 to the movies. The theater had the high back chairs. After that outing we found that 3 of the girls had lice. When I found it on my daughter I called the other parents and the two other cases were confirmed. As the three parents retraced and notified other children’s parent and the school the only place all three of us could come up with was the movies. So on that note sally, mom used nix on her, Cheryl’s mom called and a service head lice hero, and I used the mayo and olive oil treatment. All I can say is that god for Cheryl’s mom, Susan. The service, http://headlicehero.com, used a product called lice safe http://licesafe.com , all natural and chemical free, but it was very expensive she paid over $300 plus the cost of extra product. So I went online and found got the product myself for only $40 the website was http://bestpricesalon.com. So the moral of the story is you can get it anywhere no matter who you are. good luck Julie
I got lice when I worked in the day care. It wasn't that bad. You just have to treat it right away. There are tons of things you can buy to make you feel better. I remember mom doing exactly what LeaAnn said when she was the school nurse and had to check the kids.
The kids in my family have a story-"The worst night of our lives"
-we had lice
-ate brussel sprouts and deer liver for dinner
-watched return to oz
Not fun-Our sister had the lice, but we all had to have the treatment, hot wash EVERYTHING-not fun.
Yikes! Sorry about the news. But take heart--I went through the same ordeal last year, and conquered those dreaded bugs right away. If you'd like a copy of the how-to handbook I wrote just for parents who have no idea what to do about head lice, I'd be happy to send you one. (Just email me.) You can find it at http://www.headlicehandbook.com
